I commanded MAT (Mobile Advisory Team) 37 in 1970-71, home base in Letrung, about 10 clicks east of Pleiku. Our 5-man team's AO covered most of the northwestern 2/3 of Pleiku Province. We worked along side of the Bahnaar, Rhade, and Jarai Montagnards, and Vietnamese RF and PF troops, from Cambodia to Miang Yiang Pass, and from the Kontum (north) border to south past Plei Do Lim. Worst place for us was Plei Krut, near the Cambodian and Kontum borders, where we stayed for a month. I experienced Hepatitis, Epilepsy (from Agent Orange), and a broken jaw that year (road ambush), but I know I'm fortunate, and no worse for the wear. The food and rice wine we had to share with the Montagnards was the worst part of the war for me. Still, a great and memorable period, exciting and very interesting. No regrets.

Fred, You have done an outstanding job. I was the Sqdn S3 on Black Hawk FB May-Nov 68, and flew our sector of the highway nearly every monring in one of your helicopters. You have taken me back 41 years on this last day of 2009! Would you be so kind as to share with me any additional photos you may have of the fire base and/or the highway such as bridge security, convoy movement, etc.? Happy New Year. Woody

Enjoyed the pic's of Mang Yang and FB Blackhawk! I was with the 35th Group/20th Engineers there in 1971 and yes the 8 inchers and 175mm kept me awake at night along with messing up my ears later in life. Thanks for the memories! Mark

Hi there: Just found your page. I joined D/2/1 in Sep 68 as a PFC and rose to SGT during the 6 mos I served in D Troops Aero Rifle Platoon. I thereafter flew as a door gunner for the remainder of my tour. I flew with several pilots (been so long)---honestly can't recall if I ever flew with you. So many memories . . . Would welcome the chance to talk with you---I plan to try an make the next 2/1 reunion. All the best,
Ray McElhaney
