I commanded MAT (Mobile Advisory Team) 37 in 1970-71, home base in Letrung, about 10 clicks east of Pleiku. Our 5-man team's AO covered most of the northwestern 2/3 of Pleiku Province. We worked along side of the Bahnaar, Rhade, and Jarai Montagnards, and Vietnamese RF and PF troops, from Cambodia to Miang Yiang Pass, and from the Kontum (north) border to south past Plei Do Lim. Worst place for us was Plei Krut, near the Cambodian and Kontum borders, where we stayed for a month. I experienced Hepatitis, Epilepsy (from Agent Orange), and a broken jaw that year (road ambush), but I know I'm fortunate, and no worse for the wear. The food and rice wine we had to share with the Montagnards was the worst part of the war for me. Still, a great and memorable period, exciting and very interesting. No regrets.
